The lower chamber works to avoid another continuing resolution as the current one expires on November 17.
The House of Representatives passed massive energy funding legislation on Thursday. The lower chamber is trying to avoid a potential government shutdown and get appropriations measures passed rather than consider another continuing resolution.
“This is the first step in getting our appropriations done,” newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson said shortly after passage. “Yesterday, I promised we were going to get back to work for the American people and today we proved it.”
Representative Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee said that the cuts of more than $5 billion in several programs were considered by legislators to be “wasteful, unnecessary, and inflationary spending.” The White House has already called the cuts unacceptable.
The energy measure is one of 12 annual funding bills needed to appropriate funds for the present fiscal year. Four were passed in early October and are stalled in the Senate. Speaker Johnson is hopeful the remaining funding bills will be passed by mid-November.
